Manaus Amazon
Manaus inaugurated in the year 1669 like a little village and military fort on the left site of the black Negro River which comes from Columbia, named "São José Vila da Barra" .
1848 changed the name and the village received the name MANAOS (later Manaus). This new name in the Indian language means “Mother of God”.
Their was an Indian tribe close to Manaus – the Manao-Indians.
Now the new Capital of the Amazon State was born.
First some English foreigners discovered the Amazon rubber and with Goodyear an Dunlop the boom began and the rubber-business let the city growing.
Very fast Manaus started to be rich with electricity, telephones and the Manaos railway company.
Some European rubber-kings loved the old city of London and the fantastic Paris in France. They bought the best construction materials from Europe and copied Europe in the Amazon. One of the most famous buildings is the Opera-house “Teatro Amazonas” and also the “Rio Negro Palace”.
Other English people smuggled a lot of rubber-seats from the Amazon to Malaysia for rubber-tree-plantagens and in the beginning of the 19.th Century the Malaysia rubber arrived on the European market and finally in the end of the twenties the rubber-boom finished.
For more than 30 years Manaus was like a “Ghost-town” very dirty, illness and unemployment.
1967 everything changed: Manaus started to be Free Tax Zone and many big World-Companies started to produce in Manaus Amazonas.
Today we have a very big industrial park, more than 400 big companies producing, the most of them in electronics and high-tech.
With around 2 million of inhabitants is Manaus the metropolis in the north of Brazil.
1994 the Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso changed the brazilian currency and stabilized the terrible inflation-rate.
Manaus is positive thinking and going forward, specially with the ecotourism, because we have so much to show – but nothing to destroy.
